Just in case, so I'm quoting fencer-x of tumblr: 'strong suggests of self-harm intention, whether conscious or otherwise.'

The last parts of chapter 8 suggests that Makoto was going to commit suicide until Haru found him.

.gif got off tumblr.

When I first read it, I didn't think of it that way at all. I remembered janeypeixies' note about triggering content before her translation of chapter 8, and was racking my brain for anything inappropriate when I finished reading the chapter. I later read fencer-x's summary of chapter 8 and was like... ooooooo.

My initial interpertation of the scene was that Makoto was gonna test himself and try swimming in the ocean on his own, even though he knew he won't be able to, hence just standing there letting the tide reach him rather than diving into the water on his own. Followed by Haru finding him before he did anything. That was it. But now that I think about it, his questions to Haru on whether he'll be ok without him around and vice versa in that situation PLUS the heads up that it's probably about suicide PLUS Haru's monologue of how Makoto "came back for him", it kinda made sense that he might've been thinking about it, and I'm just like... whut.

I mean... Makoto and Haru are only freaking 12-13 at this point of the story. It's sad to think that these kinds of thoughts go through one's mind at that age. :/ I'm starting to think that Haru must be hella pressured just... existing. I feel even more for him now during that episode where he exploded at Rin. Pretty much his whole life ever since he started swimming, he's affected so many people without even asking for it. Rin, Makoto, Nagisa, Rei, Asahi, Ikuya, Sousuke... I especially thought how unfair it was for him when Asahi and Ikuya said it was his "fault" when they couldn't swim free and enter any free races respectively because of Haru. It's not his fault that he's a good swimmer. :/ Which made me realize how realistic this point of the story was, since people (myself included) tend to intentionally/unintentionally blame other people when something doesn't go their way. Thank goodness it all turned out well in the end (as of chapter 11 that is), but holy moly Haru, LET ME HUG YOU.

Are all sports-themed manga/anime/light novels like this?! (lol)
